Thoughts about God, Creativity, and Student Ministry

In 2009, our book study will focus on Paul’s first letter to the church at Corinth…better known as I Corinthians. During this series, we will ask “What is the Church?” and “What is my role in the Church?”. We will apply the principles found in this powerful letter to our 21st century church and lives.

April Book of the Month: Servolution: Starting a church revolution through serving

There is a movement that is rumbling throughout the Body of Christ — a revolutionary army of people ready to take up the mandate to pursue the lost, the forgotten, and the poor to show them a God who is passionately in love with them. Servolution is a revolution of serving others. The troops are followers of Christ, the companies of soldiers are churches, and the weapons are towels for service. Through the story of what God is doing at Healing Place Church, Servolution will inspire you to serve, and it will give you tons of practical ideas and strategies to get you started. Change your world - start a revolution through serving.

In Servolution, Dino Rizzo shares the story of his relentless pursuit of ways to bless the lost, poor, and hurting people of his community in Jesus’ name. You’ll be amazed and inspired by the incredible ways God has used Healing Place Church to meet the needs of thousands of people. Each chapter includes practical suggestions and resources for use in any church.
Be encouraged by the testimony of how God’s Spirit can use a simple passion to serve to revolutionize your approach to ministry. Wherever you are and whatever your gifts, you can play a vital role in this revolution through serving.

CASA VIEW D-NOW
So I got to go speak at a D-Now for Casa View Students, and it was amazing.  The theme for the week was to “wonder know more”, and we discussed knowing God in a real, intimate way.  I loved getting out of the southlake bubble, and seeing students from Dallas, all from other schools, and what their relationship with God looked like.  I have so much to learn from Scott (@_scotto_) their YM as to knowing about each student and what is going on in their lives right now.  We talked about Paul, and his belief that “KNOWING CHRIST > _____________ ” and how important our heart for God is.  I know God has big plans in store for the students at Casa View, and I cant wait to hear about the work He does in their lives as they pursue a knowledge of Him that abounds in love and understanding.
I got a text from one of the students, and she was so excited after the weekend.  She said, “Guess wat just happened in me dat feels so wonderful…I just felt God touch my heart, where it feels likes he’s in me now…i’ve been waiting for so long…I want to cry cuz im so happy.”
Isn’t that why we do what we do?

Book of the Month: March
“So Beautiful: Divine Design for Life and The Church” by Leonard Sweet

What is commonly known as DNA today was called “…so pretty!” when it was discovered years ago, and over the course of his ministry, author Leonard Sweet has discovered that this divine design also informs God’s blueprint for the church. In this seminal work, he shares the woven strands that form the church: missional, relational, and incarnational. Sweet declares that this secret is So Beautiful!
Using the poignant life of John Newton as a touchstone, Sweet calls for the re-union of these three essential, complementary strands of the Christian life. Far from a novel idea, Sweet shows how this structure is God’s original intent and shares the simply beautiful design for His church.

Middle Schools & Running

so random, but I get the same feeling about going to middle schools and attempting to run…well more like a fast walk.  Let me explain.  Im a weird cross of introvert/extrovert, and something about walking onto a middle school campus to eat lunch with 200 middle school students almost gives me a panic attack!  Its loud and full of energy, and quite intimidating, even after doing it for 10 years.  Very similar to when I go run…i know its gonna hurt during and after, and i’m probably not going to run as long as i should because after 2 minutes i cant feel my legs anymore, so i kinda freak out.

Tonight i just made myself go to the gym…i didnt want to at all, but i knew that i had to and i feel so good after running (fast walking).  Something about the endorphins, getting my heartrate up and sweating alot makes you feel better…and i never regret doing it on the back end.

Friday afternoon, micah and I went to Carroll Middle School and led worship for their Students Standing Strong event.  We were a bit anxious going there especially in that its a closed campus to youth ministers and such, but we walked in the room and were surrounded by 80 7th & 8th grade students who were leading this experience.  They took all the ownership and there was this sense of excitement in the air.  Micah led worship and it was so much fun!  I got to talk about “feet & service” and had a blast and I think God was honored in it all…looking back on it, I dont regret doing that either!

Sometimes God will take us out of our comfort zone, well alot of times but i love the adventure and journey and mystery of doing things that arent comfortable because He’s stretching us and its always worth it!
